MS Excell - Payroll Timesheet Day

ALL:

Please review this article for your Journal Entry:  Philadelphia Poverty Figures (Click Link)
Federal Averages For Annual Income (Poverty Level) (Click Here For Article)

Today you will be working on Microsoft Excel and creating a time-card for yourself.  Please read the corresponding story to the number you are given in class to fill out your time-card for the week ending on December 31st, 2006.

Example Employee:  Rate per hour is $10.55.  Monday was a vacation day for eight hours. On Tuesday you worked for eight regular hours and added two hours of overtime.  On Wednesday and Thursday you worked eight hours, and Friday you worked for seven hours until you felt sick at your stomach.  You logged an hour of sick time.  You went in Saturday to make up for the time lost and added one hour of regular time and three hours of overtime.

Here are your scenarios:

Employee #1:  You make $20.25 an hour.  You felt sick on Monday and called out sick for eight hours.  You were feeling so much better the next day that you worked eight hours and then an extra three hours overtime to make up for your absence.  On Wednesday you could not be stopped again and put in an eight hour day and one hour of overtime.  Thursday you only were able to work seven hours, and Friday you worked eight hours and an extra hour of "flex" time at the normal rate to make up for Thursday.

Employee #2:  You make $14.50 an hour.  You arrived for work on Monday ready to go.  You put in eight hours and two hours of overtime.  On Tuesday you took a vacation day for eight hours of pay.  Wednesday and Thursday were regular days of eight hours each, and Friday you arrived late after two hours of sick time.  You finished the day strong and added six hours of regular time and an additional four hours of overtime.  Saturday you added four more overtime hours as well.

Employee #3:  You make $13.25 an hour.  On Monday you worked eight regular hours and four hours of overtime.  You took Tuesday as a personal day and clocked eight hours of vacation time.  On Wednesday you worked eight hours of regular time and added an additional two hours of overtime.  Thursday you were not feeling well and used eight hours of sick time.  Friday and Saturday you worked full eight hour days and logged an additional two hours of overtime.

Overtime for everyone is time and a half so multiply your hourly rate by 1.5 and you will have the overtime rate.  Sick time and Vacation Time are the same rate as your regular rate.

Take a look at your TOTAL PAY in the bottom right hand corner.  In your email, for extra credit, figure out what that number would be if you took out the following deductions:

  • Local Tax:  4.33%
  • State Tax:  3.07%
  • Federal Tax:  15%
  • Social Security:  6.5%
  • Medical Coverage:  1.4%
  • Retirement / 401K:  2%

Once you complete your time-card, email it to me and mention in your email what the total check would be after deductions.  I will review it and print a final one for you to sign.  This final form is your ticket out of my room today.  Anyone who does not complete the project by the end of class will owe me an additional task for homework.  This is easy and I will review a time-card with everyone before letting you loose on this project.

Good Luck!!

MS Excel Bootcamp - Family Budget - Grocery Day

Hello Everyone,

Please use the handout to plan your menu for a week.  I would like you to plan at least 2 dinners for 2 and a family dinner (6 people or more) for the weekend sometime.  It can be breakfast, lunch, or dinner, but include anything you would normally serve.  Once your menu is complete, make a grocery list.  In addition to groceries, there is a list of other items (BELOW) that you will need to keep at your home.  Detergent, soap, etc.  You may also include any items you might actually use regularly to your shopping list.  Finally, go to the website below and price everything you will need.  You may need to make substitutions, but you will get a good general idea of prices for your weekly shopping trip.  You will enter these figures on your monthly budget when you are finished as actual costs.

Laundry Detergent, Soap, Shampoo, Deodorant, a Mop, All-Purpose Cleaner, Light Bulbs, Dish Soap, Soda (ie. Coca Cola, Pepsi, etc.),  Tylenol, Band-Aids, Cold Medicine, and a Bucket.

All:

Today and tomorrow you will be using your time in class to research the cost of living in the Philadelphia area.  You may break into teams and help each other find the following items for your budgets:

Rent/Mortgage - You must find a real apartment in the area.  Know if your rent includes heat, hot water, etc.  You must have an actual address for your home.  Use Craigslist or another search site.

Transportation - Bus, Car, Train, Etc.  You must include your cost of transportation in your budget.  If you buy a car, you must include monthly payment, insurance, and upkeep.

MS Excel - BootCamp Family Monthly Budget Project 2011-2012

Good Morning,

Open Microsoft Excel 2007.  Click the Windows Button and Select NEW.  In the search box type "budget" and then select the "Monthly Family Budget".  Make sure it matches the one on the following website:

You could also go to the website and download it from me.

Each Day you will have to save changes and email it to yourself.  You can avoid emailing it by saving to a flash drive.  THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT YOUR COPY WILL STAY ON THE SYSTEM YOU ARE WORKING ON HERE IN CLASS.  Final budgets will be due Friday, December 16th at the end of class.

On the first page you will notice, it is a template for a family budget.  Today you will be entering your basic startup information. (See Class Example On Screen)  You have a job in the Philadelphia Area.  The job cards are being distributed.  You must enter your information, find housing near your job, work out transportation, utilities and other information.  Over the next few days you will get changes to your plan and have to adjust your budget to reflect the changes.  Final budgets will be graded.  Please complete the changes and email the final budgets to me on time (Friday).

TODAY:  Email your budget to me as an attachment.  I will send you back your next instructions for tomorrow.  Anyone not following along, or if you miss a class, can catch up with a daily look at this blog for instructions.

Grading is as follows:     Initial Budget Setup =   30 points
                                     Changes Completed =  30 points
                                     Final Presentation =      40 points

Class Today

Hello All:

While I am out on a personal day, please use today to wrap up some loose ends before we start our MS Excel Personal Family Budget Project.

Journal Entry:  Please read the article at this LINK and write in your journal about how you can control your spending around the holidays and still get enough gifts for your family and friends.  Try to think about the amount of debt incurred during this time of year and tell me about two ways you could give a gift that did not cost anything.

Today I would like you to review your portfolio at Investopedia.com and check out our stock market game rankings.  Bear in mind that anyone with a portfolio value greater than mine on December 22nd, 2011 will be allowed to come to the 4th period pizza party.  There are also prizes for the best portfolio in each class!!

Finally,  Please review the two MS Excel spreadsheets we looked at previously this week.  Open Excel and be familiar with opening new documents, changing values, identifying specific cells, rows, and columns, and being able to save your work and post it to your website.

I would also like each of you to sign into your Scratch.Mit.Edu account and find a digital animation or game that you like and post it to the front page of your website next to the response form.  Please use the custom HTML block and past the applet of the game or cartoon of your choice.  If you do it right, I should be able to see/play the game you chose from your website when I pull it up.

Good Luck, See You All Monday!!
